I survived Port Elgin
I came back from Port Elgin, which is where the CAW Education Centre is located. I went for a one-week Health and Safety course. It's one in a series of four or five courses. This one was a general course in Health and safety, with participants from all over Canada. In my class (there were two sections that week), there were miners from BC, a rail worker, a couple of guys from a bus manufacturer in Winnipeg, a guy from a courier company, a bunch from the Big 3, and me, the lone clerical worker. It was an interesting experience... can't wait to go back for the next course, which is being offered at the end of March!
Pics from the event are here. If you're from the class and reading this, and have pics, send them to me.

Kristen's Birthday present arrives
My birthday was a few weeks ago, but Kristen's bead shipment hadn't arrived in time. Her much-anticipated present arrived on Friday. Isn't it beautiful? Lampwork glass beads and little pink pearls and quartz beads make this bracelet and earring set a real beauty!!! Doesn't she do awesome work?
In other birthday news, Greg's parents gave me Greg's grandfather's stamp collection. I started collecting stamps again a few years ago, so Greg's parents thought that this family heirloom would be an interesting addition to my collection. I haven't seen some of these types of albums since I was a kid, so I was really excited. Greg bought me the Muppet show, season 1 DVD collection, and the Vanity Project CD. The Vanity project is Steven Page, from the Barenaked Ladies, solo project, and I had it on my Amazon.com wish list. There are some really great tracks on it.
The Oakes family's annual Christmas in July (on Civic Holiday weekend) reunion was held at Greg's Aunt Nancy's house. I only took a few pics, and they didn't turn out too well, so I'm not posting them.
More news later...

LANCE DOES IT AGAIN!!!
(courtesy of internetbumperstickers.com)
Yesterday, Lance Armstrong won his SEVENTH Tour de France in a row!!! Winning seven TdF itself over a number of years would be a feat, winning them in a row is an even BIGGER feat, but winning them AFTER battling cancer?!?!? Kinda makes your life feel somewhat meaningless, doesnt it?

Harry Potter, etc.
I finally got my copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince this week. It was supposed to have arrived Saturday, but didn't get here 'til Tuesday. I read 1/4 on Tuesday, 1/4 on Wednesday. I didn't read any last night...poker night down at the local bar., finished it about a half-hour ago. Favorite quote from the book was from Dumbledore, when asked if was feeling alright after he was in the bathroom so long ... "No, I was merely reading Muggle magazines", said Dumbledore. "I do love knitting patterns".
In other news, Mike Harris came in to town on his way to a field trip in the Yukon. I think it's the first time I've ever seen him without any beard...he looks really weird...like guys always do when they all-of-a-sudden show up without facial hair.
On the gardening front, we've been harvesting more cucumbers that were even BIGGER than the ones in the last entry. We got our first green peppers, and cherry tomatos are only a couple of days away. Yum!!!
Bandit goes in for her mid-summer shave tomorrow. Maria has been looking for a new car, and I'm going to go test driving with her while Bandit is getting groomed.
That's it for now....TTFN

Garden pics
Is it just me, or this more than a little phallic?
Green peppers...or are these the red peppers? Don't know... Greg tossed the tags.
Gigantic cucumbers
Cherry tomatos
The clematis is STILL blooming!
Black-eyed Susans
Technicolor marigolds
In other news...we finally decided to check out the poker tournaments at the friendly neighborhood dive bar. The weekly Thursday tourneys are $5 to enter, winner-takes-all. I took it all...hehehe. I knocked out EVERYone at the final table all by myself. Can't wait 'til this Thursday!
They also have a monthly tournament, a weekly league that has a nine-week cycle, and a heads-up tourney in August... woohoo!!!
Greg took Bandit down to the lake while we were visiting his parents' cottage over the Canada Day weekend. Bandit came back a big giant mudball, but she had a blast, so I guess it was worth it.

I LOST!!!
Yep.....I finished 30th out of 250 people in my first round.....in the Degree Poker Cahmpionships.
It was announced that over 20,000 people entered for 1600 spots in two Regional tourneys. Each Regional tourney had 1000 people in it, with 800 seats given away in the internet contest, and 200 from the host casinos. There were four tourneys in Round one on Monday, with 20 from each going to Round Two on Tuesday. Tuesday's round had the 80 players playing down to 20 players, with those 20 going on to the finals.
The day started at 6 am. We had to be there to register two hours before our round started. I was in Round 1A at 8 AM. While we were waiting to be let into the room, I was sitting on this bench near the ballroom. There were two other guys that came and sat down beside me. There was a guy in a suit at the far end of the bench, making notes in a notepad. The one guy, with the Unabomber persona going, kept going on about how he was winning about $1000 a week online, and how he was going to kick ass in this tourney. He figured out that the suit was a TSN guy, so he started grilling him about when the tourney was going to be on TV (September sometime), and how much of the early qalifying rounds were going to be on (not much probably). The TSN guy asked him a few questions about his strategy, etc., and Unabomber wouldnt shut up. TSN guy, trying to get away from him, points out that I'm one of the few women there (there might have been only five out of 250 that I saw), and decides that he wanted to ask me some questions. Unabomber wouldn't shut up, so the TSN guy drags me away to ask me questions. I tell the TSN guy that Unabomber will be out in less than 20 minutes, but he says that it won't be that long. TSN guy was right - Unabomber didn't last more than three or four hands, AND he was yapping about finding the TSN guy on his way out.
We finally start the tourney. Three of the four or five women in the room are at my table. One of them went out in the first hand. At least that wasn't me!!
There was this guy doing commentary with a microphone walking around. Every time someone went all-in, he would announce it as a "Degree All-in moment". It was really distracting. Most of the players wanted to smack him.
Blinds started at 25/50, then went up to 50/100, 75/150 then 100/200 with a 25 ante, then 150/200 with a 50 ante, then 200/400 with a 75 ante and so on. At the 500/1000 point, there were three tables left with about 30 people. I was big blind. I had a pair of 7s. When the betting got to me, I bet $3000. Two of the other players left in betting fold, the other calls. The flop is 7 Q 9. I decide to slow play and check, and the other guy left bets all in. I look him up and down to see if he is beating me, decide he isn't and call. He has a pair of Kings. I am beating him at this point with three 7. The next two cards J 10, giving him a straight, which of couorse beat my three 7s. I think he was more surprised than me. Given that I get rivered all the time, I wasn't really as surprised as I should have been.
As players left, they were given a gift bag featuring a tshirt, a Degree deodorant, and a CD with a poker game. The Casino threw in some ad brochures.
I stayed at the Sheraton. I got a good rate because I have one of the Casino's players cards. I didn't have a falls view room, but this was the view from the window at the elevator...

SOMSD Continued
Today is the last day of SOMSD. It was pretty cold in the room where the conference is being held. I left the room to warm up during one of the talks. I came back to find that the data projector had overheated and shut itself off, right in the middle of the presentation. Luckily the presenter was using the document reader, and was able to switch over to an overhead projector.
Hopefully (again, knocking on wood), that will be the biggest catastrophe of the whole conference. Otherwise, people seem to be impressed by the facilities (the building is is only a couple of years old) both the residence and the conference room.

Southern Ontario Matrices and Statistics Days
SOMSD started this morning...I've been up since 5:30 this morning, arrived at the venue at 7:15, and hopefully I'll be home by 6:00 pm tonight.
The event is going better than I planned, no major snafus YET (knock on wood). I'm writing this as a talk is going on. Too much math and stats for me in one day...

I'm going to a BIG poker tournament!!!
THere've been these commercials on the sports channels, advertising a big poker tournament, sponsored by Degree deodorant. They drew a bunch of names from the entries and guess what? I'm one of them!!!
There are two qualifying tournaments one on the West Coast, and one for the "East" June 20-22) , with a final tournament for the finalists from both tournaments coming together for all the chips (June 23-24). The East qualifier and the finals are being held at the Niagara Fallsview Casino. The winner of the tournament gets $100,000 AND a trip to Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker in July.
WOOHOO!!!
If I can get an internet station during the tourney, I will post on my blog...

My latest project
I've started a new crochet project. At the rate I'm doing squares - one about every hour twenty minutes (yeah, yeah...I'm slow....get over it), I should be done in about three weeks, if I do this twenty four hours a day.
What's it going to be? Eventually, if I do about twenty or thirty more sets of 9 like this, I should have a couple of curtains for my kitchen. Stay tuned.
In other news, we just came back from a couple days at Greg's parents' cottage. I can't say it's REALLY roughing it - we watched the Memorial Cup games on the sattelite. The water from the tap, however is a light brown colour and has a sulphur-mettalic smell, which I've been told is MUCH better now that there are three filters on it. (I dont want to think about what it smelled like BEFORE the filters were installed.) Greg's mom and I went out looking for maple syrup this morning, because God forbid you should have pancakes without it..... mmmmm real maple syrup.

More Spring pics!!
More updates from the yard...
More tulips are just around the corner
Strawberries!!
The clematis was cut down to the black pipe in the fall... it's growing like a weed!
Of course dandelions abound too.
In other news, Greg and Bandit are at Greg's parents' house and cottage for the next week or so. Greg will be painting the cottage, and Bandit will be going to keep him company.
Greg's brother, Sean, will be leaving for a five-month trip to the Phillipines. He will be training about 800 people for a new call-center to be opened there. His girlfriend Sheila, will join him about a week or two later.

My climbing plant with the purple flowers....... it's CLEMATIS (getting that word off my tongue - that feels MUCH better)!!!
Today started out cold, but turned out pretty nice...about 10C. Everything seems ok; the strawberry plants even have flowers on them!

Yes, you read that right!!! It's April 24 and there's snow falling AND sticking!!!
I just hope the snow doesn't kill the rest of my tulips, which were just starting to bud, or my strawberries, or my climbing plant with the purple flowers....... (dang, don't you just HATE it when you've got something right on the TIP of your tongue, but can't seem to shake it loose?)

Oh, yeah... I forgot.....
Reading Lisa's blog today reminded me of a MAJOR event that happened in December...
The first Saturday in December was snowy and slippery. However, that didn't stop Maria and I from going off into the county to go to an auction. Somewhere near Wheatley, I hit some black ice, was about to recover, when I hit another patch and skidded off the road and bumped a tree.
It wasn't even enough to make the airbags go off!! Of course, my cellphone was dead :P. We were right next to a farmhouse, so I trudged off to hopefully use their phone to call a tow truck. No luck - there were TWO trucks in the driveway, but no one home. The car was driveable, but there was a pretty big "bump" between the shoulder and the decline to the tree. I'm thanking God for the tree, because if it wasn't for the tree, they'd have been fishing the car from a big 6-7 foot deep ditch. First a car passes by, and offers the use of his cell phone, but it wasn't working out in the middle of nowhere (must have been a Fido phone). A fire truck happened by, and called the police for us. They were told they had to stay there until the cops got there. I felt bad about that, after all, there had been lots of accidents that morning, and here they were wasting their time babysitting us, who weren't even hurt. The cops and the tow truck showed up, and it all took less than an hour.
I figured there'd only be a few hundred dollars damage - a new bumper cover, straighten out the ding in the front fender....but NOOOOOOOOO! The original estimate was $2700, with the disclaimer that once they took off the bumper assembly, the rad and airconditioning systems could be damaged. And of COURSE they were. Grand total - over FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! and i just BUMPED a TREE!!! Sheesh.
Glad Lisa survived her brush with black ice unhurt! The car looked pretty banged up.
Sheesh.

Today is pi day!!!
No...that WASN'T a typo. March 14 (3-14) is 'pi' day. (Got it yet?)
To celebrate 'pi' day, the Department's Math + Stats Club hosted Pi(e) day, serving assorted slices of pie to faculty, staff and students.
The Department also has a pi club, where members get "pieces" of pi. I am an honorary member, with my slice being the 10141-10145th decimal digits of pi (33665). Back in the day, the Undergraduate club sold mugs that said "Have a coffee with your piece of pi", with a "piece" of pi printed on the bottom.
So, get out there and celebrate pi day!!

Ahhhh... the things I'll do to avoid a class assignment.
Wow, it's been a long time since I've updated!! I promise to try to update a little more often. As you can see, I've done a little redecorating. Send comments via the guestbook.
Holiday pics are finally available. So are the pics I took over the holidays from Greg's parents' new cottage.
Lots of stuff has happened since the last update...
The Ecco outlet in Windsor closed. Thankfully the one in Niagara Falls is still open. Another excuse to visit Kristen (wink).
A secretary in my Department left to take another position, decided she didn't like it, and is coming back on the 21st. We also went through a couple of temps in other positions. Our Department is going through the hiring process for more faculty.
We made the annual holiday visit to Greg's parents, and me to visit Kristen.
Maria and I will be going to Vegas for Sharon's birthday. I won't say here how old she is (You're welcome, Sharon) .
Stay tuned....
